What Are Green Coffee Beans?

Posted on

Green coffee beans are coffee beans plucked from the coffee bush and left raw and unroasted. These coffee beans, when roasted, are the same beans used worldwide to brew coffee. Green coffee bean benefits come into play when chlorogenic acids in the unroasted bean are consumed. chlorogenic acids are thought to be the key component for healthy weight management. Once coffee beans are roasted for brewing, the structure of the chlorogenic acids change and are thought to be less effective for weight management. The creation of an extract of green coffee beans allows for a greater concentration of the beneficial chlorogenic acids.*

Coffee Bean Varieties

The two most common varieties of coffee bean are Coffea arabica and Coffea robusta. Arabica is more widely grown, contributing approximately 75 to 80 percent of the world’s coffee beans while Robusta makes up the remaining 20 to 25 percent of coffee beans. Robusta beans also contain slightly more caffeine than Arabica.
