What is a Superfood
Superfoods don't look like superheroes. They don't wear capes and can't leap tall buildings (they can't even stop a speeding train). Superfoods are an excellent addition to your diet, since they are especially rich in vitamins, antioxidants, polyphenols and minerals. The Oxford Dictionary defines a superfood as "a nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being." At Pure Health, we tend to think of them as being on the powerful side - even everyday heroes.
You Say Tomato, I Say Tomato, too!
A common superfood may be sitting underneath the bun of a fast-food burger - the humble tomato. We don't know why the tomato would be in such company (probably to balance out the missing nutrients in the burger). Tomatoes are rich in vitamin C, potassium, fiber and lycopene. Lycopene is believed to protect your skin from UV rays, for starters. Tomatoes pack lots of nutrition under their bulbous skin.
Berries are also a common superfood and are as tasty as they are healthy! Berries are rich in phytonutrients and antioxidants. Let's not forget nuts, beans, kale, salmon and pomegranates. Each offers nutritional support for good health.
Not So Common Superfoods
There are also superfoods you may not have even heard of. They can be hard to find or not easily consumed in their natural state. These include Acai and Goji berries, Garcinia Cambogia and Noni fruit. Each superfood has its own unique nutrient profile.
The common American diet is often missing a healthy balance of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and antioxidants. A well-balanced diet supports the body in natural energy, healthy immune responses and strong bones, among other things.
How Superfoods Benefit You
Weight Management: a body lacking in nutrients can trigger cravings that lead to overeating and poor food choices. Many different organ systems contribute to weight control. If your body's functions are tip-top, it can reward you with the ability to achieve and maintain a healthy weight!*
Healthy Aging: nothing stops the natural aging process, but a healthy, balanced diet can help you look and feel younger from the inside to the glow of your skin on the outside!*
Eating foods that are considered superfoods isn't always easy. Many superfoods are not readily available in consumable form. Supplements can fill that gap in a snap! Superfood juices such as Pure Mangosteen or Pure Acai make tasty additions to your morning smoothie or a sweet, healthy nightcap! Capsule supplements are even easier to take - no refrigeration required and easily portable.
